Hub can help North Brisbane families connect for a happier and healthier 2012

The Benevolent Society is reminding North Brisbane families looking to get off to a happier and healthier start to the year to consider paying a visit to the Women’s Health and Mother Baby Hub.

Business Development Manager, Renee Veldman-Tentori said the Women’s Health and Mother Baby Hub made it easy for families to make a positive start to 2012.

“With January now well underway, many people have already deferred their New Year’s resolution to get off to a healthy start, or get their finances in order for 2012 simply because they don’t know where to start,” Ms Veldman-Tentori said.

“The Women’s Health and Mother Baby Hub is a central place families can go for everything from exercise classes to parenting support and medical advice.

“From the moment parents walk in the door, they are greeted by a friendly team of professionals who can help them and their children with everything from:

  • health checks and immunisations to prepare children for the start of the school year
  • playgroups and pre-prep groups to help children prepare for school or kindergarten, and give parents the chance to meet each other
  • parenting discussion groups for mums and dads to swap stories and tips
  • financial planning and budgeting advice for low income earners through Australia’s largest matched savings program, Saver Plus
  • medical support from our female doctors, midwife, health nurse or a psychologist.”

Ms Veldman-Tentori said the Hub’s range of activities helped families build up stronger local support networks.

“Research shows people are happier, healthier and more confident when they feel connected to their communities, so the Women’s Health and Mother Baby Hub makes it as easy as possible to help people meet other local parents and build support networks.

“As well as offering formal sessions and professional support, we also have a café where people can drop by for an informal chat and a range of volunteer roles that give people a chance to more actively engage in community activities.”

The Women’s Health and Mother Baby Hub is an initiative of The Benevolent Society, Australia’s first charity. The Benevolent Society aims to make communities stronger and more resilient by increasing social support networks, building relationships in the community and encouraging community involvement in local groups and decision-making.

Anti Poverty Week: Free Family Fun Discussion

Anti-Poverty Week runs from 16-22 October, with the main aims to strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia and encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems.

On Wednesday 19 October, the Women’s Health & Mother Baby Hub hosted a morning tea, providing information to families who are parenting on a budget.

We led a discussion on Free Family Fun and if you missed it the summary is below with some great ideas of what to do with your family for free in this region….

Keeping your family entertained and having fun doesn’t have to be expensive.  Here are a few ideas to get you started in the local area which are free (or very close to it!).  Have you got some of your own ideas?  Let us know and we’ll share them on our Facebook page for other families to enjoy.

  • Old Petrie Town: Take the whole family for a visit on a Sunday, where there is a free live band and a market to explore.  Children can play in the playground.  Tea/coffee and plenty of food available, though you can also take a picnic.  http://www.oldpetrietown.com/
